Excellent article, Diane. Just a minor historical point about something you said, from an old timer: I'm sure you do know, but many of your younger readers probably don't know that there was no such thing as recorded video in 1943. Video cameras did exist but they were huge monsters on large carriages and mostly confined to studios. As early as the late 1930s, there was such a thing as broadcast video possible on a very limited basis in the NYC area, but virtually no one had a receiver (tv set!) to view it. So ALL video at that time was LIVE. Film cameras, still and movie, were the ONLY way for anyone to record images in 1943. "Kinescope" was being developed in the 1940s but it was simply a filmed recording of a video image on a monitor screen. Videotape did not exist until the mid-1950s. ALL the television we watched in the 1950s was produced live in a studio as it was viewed. Just to lend some perspective to the limitations of "the media" in Roosevelt's time.

Geez, you are quite the video historian! No, I was not aware that there were no tapes, just live events transmitted on a limited basis. I know the media never shot a photo of FDR getting in & out of the car, wheelchair, etc. They always waited politely until his leg braces were locked and he was leaning on the podium BEFORE taking his picture. Most Americans did not know he lived in a wheelchair. Even with the media dishonesty today, there is no way to hide a president's lack of walking ability.

I don't think much of LBJ. He deliberately kept the Vietnam war going for profits, and his welfare programs destroyed the black family. He was a womanizer and a liar.

BUT... when advised that he likely wouldn't live out another term, he chose to not run. Give him a credit for that.

I LOATHE LBJ, SIMPLY LOATHE him for what he did to my generation of young men. Have you read my article about the JFK assassination, published last November? I have visited the LBJ Library in Austin, researched him extensively in 2017-2018 because I hate him so much.
