Born in the 1940's, I grew up in SE Texas, near Galveston where the proclamation was read. Juneteeth has ALWAYS been a big celebration in Texas each year.

More than a dozen of my friends from New England states, NY, & NJ NEVER HEARD OF IT. I'm white, but I spent the day manning a first aid booth at the Juneteenth Celebration where I live. You don't have to be black to celebrate the end of slavery. Everybody should be working to abolish slavery worldwide. Today 167 COUNTRIES harbor 46 MILLION SLAVES.

Interesting. Pandering to black voters, whom Democrats are losing to Republicans, they decided to make this a national holiday. I grew up in Washington State and I never heard of this until, about a decade ago, I was studying the Civil War in depth.
