I am all for helping our allies, but for decades this country has forgotten about taking care of the American people in a timely manner. This country rushes to give billions of dollars to countries fighting wars and sometimes they just give these countries money just as a favor to them, but American citizens here in North Carolina are dealing with the after effects of a natural disaster, 9-11 responders pleading for medical assistance, Flint Michigan citizens dealing with contaminated drinking water, and etc have to scream to be heard. As for Ukraine, sound arguments can be made for investing in a proxy war in Europe to beat back an aggressor. We saw what happened in 1915 and 1939 when we looked the other way.
I am all for making sure America is on a sound footing and you are correct that State and local governments should be given help from the clowns in DC to help people living in an emergency right now. But I ask you to think more carefully and in a deeper way about national security. The two things you point to - engagement with the wider world and paying attention to what happens here are not mutually exclusive.
