While private forest landowners made noise about the radical environmental movement’s successful shutdown of national forest timber harvest auctions, aided by the Clinton-Gore administration’s failed Northwest Timber Plan, the privately held timber company giants had achieved their goal — eliminating their hundreds of mom and pop timber harvesting and processing mill competitors scattered throughout the Pacific Northwest.
The societal and economic cost was enormous. Some 500 mills and 70,000 family wage jobs vanished over the years.
The scientifically proven methods of forest stewardship and management of our abundant, sustainable national forests was largely abandoned by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. Their leaders in Washington, D.C. adopted the failing environmental philosophy of allowing nature to take it course in our forests. The result is millions of acres of bug infested trees and burned forests lost to wildfires from California to Canada.
Will President Trump’s commitment to increase national forest timber harvests succeed? It won’t be easy. Generations of timber workers lost their jobs and businesses a generation ago. They were told to “learn code.” That forest lore, experience and infrastructure are lost. Those fractured rural timber communities were forced to choose a different path to survive.
It takes a brave, smart, and physically fit man to head out at 4 a.m. to start work harvesting 100-foot tall Doug Firs, Hemlocks and Red Cedars.
You have a good memory. I vaguely remember the beginning of this assault on loggers. The final blow would have been Kate Brown's cap & trade scam which would have outlawed "big trucks" that were 10 years old or more. This would not have hampered big companies. It would have put "a man & his truck" out of business. Democrats hate the self-employed and small business owners. Eleven Republicans in the house or senate (I don't remember which) saved Oregonians.

We may not resolve it in my generation but we can start brainstorming and real, productive conversations to move us closer to solutions.
